is the sky the limit?

what makes it so that one person is abled or Un-abled? in Mair's essay "Disability," she depicts the pitiful lives the media has given the disabled. by portraying the disabled as unordinary, the media has created a barrier that impairs how the normal view the unusual. Mair's shows how the media has created such stereotypes for those who are different. The people who are impaired cannot be proud of who they are and chase after the person they love without hesitation; she must first be "terribly upset by the diagnosis" then respond by running away from reality, away from her happiness to somewhere far away and foreign.
even though a minority of people are unfortunately Crippled, the physical disability "doesn't devour one wholly." they still preform the same tasks other individuals do. like all others, they have a social life, they drive in cars and guess what they eat pizza too! Mair points out that people cannot except the disabled as normal because it is frightening to "admit that there is something ordinary about disability itself, [perhaps the fact] that it may enter anybody's life." Mair's constantly emphasizes on how ridiculous it is for people to segregate products by who uses them. if a person of fame drinks Coke, the soft drink becomes the next hottest beverage, but if a Blind child were to order Coke, would people stop drinking Coke because they still have the blessing of sight?
Mair continues by stating how such separation has made the disabled feel less worthy and more alienated. the concept led me to think of all of the amazing athletes and models out there who show the world that their imperfections don't put a limit to their dreams. as Mair's had listed, MS did not stop her from buy tampons nor did it change her need for mouthwash and lotion. her "chronic incurable degenerative disease" did not hinder her from becoming a distinguish author either. with this essay she reveals the injustices of media and proves that the Disabled are Capable of the ordinary and beyond.

  1. I really like how you included mental disabilities as well as physical disabilities in your blog post. I also think that the pictures you used really set off the discussion in your post extremely well.

  2. hey jessie! i wrote a pretty similar post to yours and i thought we shared a lot of similar ideas about how Mairs was really effective in saying how disabled people are just like any person who is free of disabilities. i thought you used a lot of nice quotes to blend in your thoughts and also the images tied in really well. good job!

  3. Great use of textual evidence. Your post was short yet it touched on the most important topics which I really liked! I feel bad we can't learn to accept the disabled as a community,it shows how far we really haven't come in society. Maybe one day!
